Malaysian food calorie tracker
Calorie counting that knows what nasi lemak is.
Most calorie apps are built around foods you don’t eat. In Daybrim, type “nasi lemak with egg and teh tarik” or snap a photo of your plate, and get a calorie estimate for the meal you actually had.
- Type it or snap a photo
- Mamak, hawker and home cooking
- Free during early access
How it works
- Describe or photograph your meal. “Roti canai with dhal, kopi O kosong” is enough.
- Get an estimate. Daybrim breaks the meal into items with calories, protein, carbs and fat. Adjust anything that looks off.
- Keep to your goal. Set a daily calorie target and a water goal, and see how today is going on the Home screen.
Rough calories in popular Malaysian food
Portions vary a lot between stalls and kitchens, so treat these as ballpark ranges for a typical single serving, not exact figures.
| Food | Typical serving | Approx. calories |
|---|---|---|
| Nasi lemak | Packet with sambal, egg, ikan bilis and peanuts | 400–650 kcal |
| Roti canai | 1 piece with dhal | 300–400 kcal |
| Char kuey teow | 1 plate | 600–800 kcal |
| Mee goreng mamak | 1 plate | 550–700 kcal |
| Nasi goreng kampung | 1 plate | 550–750 kcal |
| Chicken rice | 1 plate, roasted or steamed | 500–700 kcal |
| Curry laksa | 1 bowl | 500–750 kcal |
| Teh tarik | 1 cup with condensed milk | 100–200 kcal |
| Cendol | 1 bowl | 250–400 kcal |
The big swings usually come from oil, coconut milk, sugar and portion size. That’s why describing the meal you had (“less rice”, “kurang manis”, “extra egg”) gives a better estimate than picking a generic entry from a list.
Goals and gentle nudges
Turn on diet goals for yourself or any family member, set a calorie and water target, and choose how Daybrim nudges you: gentle, or a little cheeky. Diet goals are off unless you switch them on.
More than calories
Meals sit in the same journal as your medicines, symptoms, sleep and blood pressure. Insights shows them side by side, which helps if you’re managing diabetes, blood pressure or weight with your doctor or dietitian.
Calorie estimates are approximate and meant to help you notice patterns. For a meal plan, especially with diabetes, kidney or heart conditions, speak to your doctor or a dietitian.

How accurate are the calorie estimates?
They’re estimates, like any calorie app, and portions at stalls vary. They’re most useful for spotting patterns over a week. You can edit any item before saving.
Does it understand Malay, Chinese and Indian dishes?
Yes. Describe the meal the way you’d order it, such as “nasi kandar with fried chicken and kuah campur” or “wantan mee dry”, and Daybrim estimates each part.
Do I need to use the photo feature?
No. Typing a short description works too. Photo and text estimates are optional AI features that stay off until you turn them on.
Can I set a calorie goal for my parent?
Yes. Diet goals are set per person, so each family member can have their own target, or none at all.
Is it free?
Yes. Every feature is free while Daybrim is in early access. We’ll give plenty of notice before any paid plans start, and you won’t be charged unless you choose one.
Do I need to download an app?
No app store download is needed. Daybrim runs in your browser on Android, iPhone and desktop. Add it to your home screen and it opens full screen and sends reminders like any other app.
Is Daybrim medical advice?
No. Daybrim helps you record and organise your health information. It does not diagnose, prescribe or replace a doctor or pharmacist. If symptoms are severe or feel like an emergency, seek medical help immediately.
